How do you feel about painted furniture?" Halfpoint Images/Getty ImagesDemand is up for vintage wood furniture — without paintPart of the backlash certainly stems from the current state of the furniture industry, in which it's increasingly difficult to get your hands on brand-new, high-quality furniture. As a result, the secondhand furniture market is booming, with vintage furniture sellers proliferating on places like Instagram and Facebook Marketplace. The flippers said most of the hate comments tend to come from flips of midcentury modern furniture, in particular, a beloved and lasting design aesthetic from around roughly the 1930s to 1970s. Despite all the vocal online haters of painted furniture, there's a reason furniture flippers do it: the pieces sell.

Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?

It took a toilet paper shortage for some to come around to the 18th-century invention. A common reason why bidets aren’t used in the US is that during World War 2, American soldiers saw brothels utilizing bidets. Big Toilet PaperWhen the great toilet paper shortage hit in 2020, many Americans realized there could be another way to clean themselves. Using toilet paper had seemed, somehow, American, with toilet paper jokes a staple in bathroom humor and “TP-ing” a stereotypical rite of passage for teens. With the toilet paper mania, she decided to kill two birds with one stone and splurge on a Tushy.

“Breaking 234 years of precedent, the incumbent administration has charged President Trump for acts that lie not just within the ‘outer perimeter,’ but at the heart of his official responsibilities as President,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in the court filing. Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers reportedly motioned to dismiss charges related to hush money payments in a New York case, where they argued that the indictment was intended to interfere with the presidential election. His lawyers also requested this week that his federal trial in Florida relating to the mishandling of classified documents be delayed until after the presidential election. The most memorable and oft-quoted line of her opinion suggested she might take a dim view of Trump’s sweeping immunity claim. The case seems likely to end up before the Supreme Court, which has a mixed track record on the issue.

Shutdown Concerns Remain High Despite Modest Progress

Passage of the full-year appropriations bills themselves, chock-full of conservative priorities and spending cuts that are nonstarters in the Senate, would not avert a shutdown this week. The Senate’s continuing resolution would keep funding at current levels until Nov. 17, along with appropriating around $6 billion in aid to Ukraine and $6 billion for domestic disaster relief. “By constantly adhering to what the hard-right wants, you’re aiming for a shutdown,” the New York Democrat said. Moreso, the legislation, despite having backing from a number of Senate Republicans, may face headwinds in the House. And whether House leadership even moves to bring the bill to the House floor should it pass the Senate remains an open question.

Sweden is considering sending Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, according to a new report. Even if Stockholm agrees to send Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, because it would first take time to consider the transfer and then train Ukrainian pilots, the fighter jets likely wouldn't see combat experience until mid-2024 at the earliest, the report said. Wisconsin Republicans are floating the potential impeachment of state Supreme Court judge Janet Protasiewicz. Republicans are arguing that Protasiewicz must recuse herself from redistricting cases over her comments. Earlier this year, the possibility of Protasiewicz sitting on the court and turning a conservative-leaning court into one with a liberal majority animated Republicans. Republicans now enjoy a 64-35 majority in the state Assembly and a 22-11 supermajority in the state Senate, despite Wisconsin being a perennial battleground state. Goldman Sachs' decision to charge employees for coffee might not be that outrageous after all! The largest US banks — headlined by Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo — just pledged a total of $30 billion in deposits to First Republic Bank. As detailed in a release announcing the news, the 11 banks, which also included Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, believe the move "demonstrates their overall commitment to helping banks serve their customers and communities. I can't imagine the big banks looking to pull the rug out from First Republic four months from now, but this money was a deposit, not a donation. Washington, DC CNN —Mortgage rates inched up again last week, after a slight increase the week before interrupted six straight weeks of falling rates. But mortgage rates dropped in November and December, following data that showed inflation may have finally reached its peak. “Mortgage application activity sunk to a quarter-century low this week as high mortgage rates continue to weaken the housing market,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. “While mortgage market activity has significantly shrunk over the last year, inflationary pressures are easing and should lead to lower mortgage rates in 2023.”The average mortgage rate is based on mortgage applications that Freddie Mac receives from thousands of lenders across the country. Although mortgage rates did increase slightly in recent weeks, the association expects them to fall to around 5.2 percent by the end of 2023.

The agency says that people may choose to wear masks at any time but that a “high-quality mask or respirator” is recommended for everyone when a county has a “high” Covid-19 community level. As of Thursday, about 5.66% of US counties have high community levels, including some places in Arizona, Wyoming, Oregon and the Dakotas. Even without a mandate, she emphasized community efforts like wearing masks inside when possible and getting Covid-19 vaccines or boosters. “We do know that 5% of the population is living in places with a high Covid-19 community level.
